In the beginning, WSLS ran its production from all three main networks: NBC, CBS, and ABC. WROV-TV on frequency 27 was already working as an associate of CBS in Roanoke. CBS still allowed WSL NBC to air mainly of its programs. It was because WROV had a weak UHF signal. In 1954, WSLS divided the ABC association with WLVA-TV.

Finally, it became the area’s only associate of ABC. Both the outlets also divided the CBS association. It happened until 1955 WDBJ-TV began its transmission. Later it ended up becoming the area’s only CBS associate. By the end of the 1950s and the 1960s, WSLS NBC News also ran regionally produced programs. This included Echo, Klub Kwiz, Ebb and Andy, Spectrum, Glen Howell, Cactus Joe, and Profile.

In 1969, Roy H. Park bought WSLS-TV from Shenandoah Life Insurance Company for $7.5 million. After the sale, ABC WSLS’s staff count came down from 120 to 50. This decline happened because of “budgetary reasons”. In 1972, Park had to sell off the company’s radio channels. It was due to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) limitations on radio and television cross-ownership.
