On December 11, 1949, WOAI NBC News went on the air as WOAI-TV. It was the first channel in the San Antonio business which was under the authority of Southland Industries. WOAI-TV and WOAI radio are among the few telecast channels situated west of the Mississippi River. They have a call sign starting with “W.” During the first few days of transmission, most Central Time Zone states were in the “W” territory. In 1923, the in-between line was altered to the Mississippi River. It was because WOAI Radio News was already running its transmission.

From the time of its inception, WOAI-TV NBC had been managed with NBC. WOAI radio channel had been owned by NBC Red Network. But in the beginning, it also ran production from the three other major networks of that time. Those were CBS, ABC, and DuMont. NBC WOAI terminated its association with CBS and DuMont because of KENS. This happened when that channel went on the air in February 1950. Both the outlets merged together to share ABC production. This kept on going till January 1957.
