WJXT ABC was the second station to sign on in the state of Florida. It took the credit after WTVJ. Not only this, but WJXT was also the first channel that was certified outside of Miami. The ABC 4 Jackson was under the twin ownership alongside WJXT radio. They were 1460 AM which is now WQOP and 96.1 FM which is now WEJZ. The television was initially a chief associate of CBS. It also kept secondary associations with NBC, ABC, and the DuMont Television Network. In 1953, the WJXT ABC station was bought by The Washington Post Company.

From the beginning of time, its only competition in the Jacksonville business came from the UHF channel WJHP-TV. It logged on in 1953 and went off the air three years later. Station 4 had a virtual television monopoly in northern Florida until September 1957. It was the time when it lost the NBC association to upstart WFGA channel 12.
