The channel 6 frequency was assigned to Miami by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in June 1957. WFOR was part of a minor reorganization nationwide of VHF channel assignments. WFOR CBS 4 was shifted again to the city of South Miami. This happened when Coral Television was given a development permit to build channel 6 in April 1964. In February 1967Coral Television effectively persuaded the FCC to shift the community of license back to Miami proper. It was the place where the channel could serve more audiences.

WFOR CBS constructed a transmitting tower in Homestead. It was 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Miami, farther south than the Miami–Fort Lauderdale business’s other television. This prearrangement was necessary to protect WPTV in West Palm Beach and WDBO-TV which is now WFOR, and also on channel 6 in Orlando. As a result, Miami’s station 6 only gave a “Grade B” signal to Fort Lauderdale. It was virtually not accessible in the northern portion of Broward County.
