The transmitter tower of WBZ is constructed and situated in Needham on Cedar Street. WGBX and WBTS both shared the same transmitter facility which is under the possession of American Tower Corporation. The first official launch of a television network in the market was on June 9, 1948, and the founder of the station was Westinghouse Electric Corporation. On June 17, 1948, the master control room and other technical operations were used from the facility of Westinghouse Broadcasting Center. WBZ transmitter tower was destroyed in a series of Hurricanes on August 31, 1954, and a new tower was installed on the studio facility. Later it was being used by the WEEl radio which was based in Malden. In 1957, a highly elevated transmitter tower was utilized by the WBZ which is based in Needham, and this facility is shared with many Boston television outlets along with the WGBH television station.
NBC affiliation was almost lost from channel 4 during a purchase deal of radio broadcasting division of KYW and Philadelphia-based WPTZ television station. Westinghouse decided to file a complaint to Federal Communications Commission. E. W. Scripps Company announced to have WMAR-TV and affiliation with WEWS was switched from ABC programming. New World Communications acquired the association with Fox network and CBS got associated with the market-based KYW and WBZ television stations.
