It is also known as virtual channel 31 via PSIP. It has a transmitting tower at its offices on Monte Sano Boulevard on top of Monte Sano Mountain. The channel was first telecasted on August 1, 1959, as KTRK ABC 13 News Houston. It was Alabama’s first initial ABC associate. There was only one other channel in the region at the time. It was Decatur’s WAAY News which is now Huntsville’s WAAY ABC News being an associate of NBC. This was a rare deal for a two-channel business. Particularly one as small as Huntsville was at that time.

The channel was auctioned to Smith Telecasting in 1963. They were the owners of WAAY radio which is now WLOR. The call sign was altered to WAAY-TV. At that time Smith Telecasting held a license from the FCC to place a new station on the air telecasting. When the Smith family received the proposal to buy WAAY, they decided to take that instead of building a new facility. Channel 25 was later certified to Alabama Public Television WHIQ.
Affiliation and History of WAAY:
WAAY ABC television shifted its network association to NBC. It happened on September 2, 1967. It went back to ABC approximately ten years later on December 11, 1977. ABC went down from first place in the 1980s in favor of a renewed NBC. WAAY ABC despite that still regularly came in first or second place in the ratings during the 1980s and 1990s. Nevertheless, regardless of having left full NBC association behind back in 1977, WAAY had once again unblemished some NBC production during the 1980s. Late Night with David Letterman and Friday Night Videos was most remarkable.
