This is done from a transmitting tower situated south of Monte Sano State Park. NBC WAFF News is under the authority of Gray Television. The channel maintains offices on Memorial Parkway (U.S. Highway 431) in Huntsville. WAFF is northern Alabama’s oldest television channel. The channel initially started telecasting from offices and transmitting towers in Decatur (30 miles (48 km) west of Huntsville) on July 4, 1954. It was on aired as WAAY ABC 31 News Huntsville.

NBC WAFF News was under the authority of Frank Whisenant. He was a Decatur businessman of Tennessee Valley Radio & Television Corporation. His company also owned WAFF radio (AM 1400, now WWTM). Both channels received their calls from Mutual Savings Life Insurance Company, which founded NBC WAFF in 1935. WMSL-TV basically carried production from all four networks of the time.
This included NBC, CBS, ABC, and the DuMont Network. It lost the DuMont Network when that one started shutting down in 1955. It lost ABC when WAFF started in Huntsville in 1959 as an ABC associate. Lastly, lost CBS when NBC WHNT-TV started transmitting as a CBS associate in 1963. By the end of the 1950s, NBC WMSL was also associated shortly with the NTA Film Network.
Affiliation and History of WAFF:
WAFF News television started telecasting on Channel 48 in January 1969. This happened while broadcasting on channel 23 for several days. A few weeks after, Whisenant shut down the channel’s offices in Decatur. It was when the new offices inaugurated in Huntsville. In the time being, Whisenant auctioned NBC WAFF 48 to Clete Quick. He was another Decatur businessman. Up until the early 1960s, Decatur was the biggest city in the viewing area.
