It worked as the part of a duopoly with My-Network-TV. The two channels share offices on Southwest Freeway in Houston. It is between the Uptown and Greenway Plaza neighborhood. The channel first logged on the air on August 15, 1971, as KPRC NBC 2 News Houston. It started functioning as an independent channel.

KRIV FOX was the third UHF television in Houston, after KHTV. After four years of signing on, in 1975, the channel’s call letters were altered to KDOG. KRIV was a callsign selected by former television general manager Leroy Gloger. Another former general manager, Jerry Marcus commented that he saw the calls appropriate during the channel’s constructive years as, in his words, station 26 was a “dogged channel” in regards to ratings. KRIV News motto during this time period was “Where every dog has his day.” During this time, the channel aired English-language general entertainment production.
This included old cartoons, sitcoms, and classic movies during the daytime hours. KRIV news came along with Spanish-language shows that included tele-novelas, movies and serial drama series at night. For its first twenty years on the air, KRIV 26 functioned from office facilities situated at 3935 Westheimer Road in Houston. It is at Highland Village section, which is now the site of an H-E-B Central Business. In 1986, Australian newspaper tycoon Rupert Murdoch bought KRIV FOX and the other five channel in the Metro-media group. They all turned out to be the founding affiliated channels of his new television network. It was the Fox Telecasting Company.
