KLAS CBS News first logged on the air on July 8, 1953. The channel was basically under the authority of Las Vegas Television Inc., Which was run by Hank Greenspun. He was the owner of the Las Vegas Sun. Channel 8 was the first television outlet to sign on in Nevada. It left behind KVVU FOX 5 News Las Vegas in Reno to the air by two months and five days. KLAS CBS has always been associated with CBS. It kept a secondary association with ABC as well. It shared this association with KLRJ/KORK-TV from that channel’s sign-on in January 1955.

This went on until KSHO-TV also known as channel 13 was launched in May 1956. Greenspun auctioned the channel to the leading entrepreneur in 1968. It was Howard Hughes’s Summa Corporation. After Hughes’ death in 1976, KLAS CBS was kept in an outside trust for another two years. In 1978 KLAS channel was sold to Landmark Communications. Later, Landmark Communications renamed itself to Landmark Media Enterprises in September 2008.
On April 16, 1996, KLAS turned out to be the first commercial television channel in Nevada. Not only this but also one of the first in the country to carry a digital telecast signal. This signal was first brought in during the National Association of Telecasters annual convention. Four years later on April 6, 2000, the first programmed high-resolution network telecasts in Las Vegas started on KLAS’ digital signal.
